Founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College, Hokkaido University is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious universities in Japan, consisting of 12 faculties and 21 graduate schools. 

The university also has one of Japan’s most beautiful campuses. Green spaces, forests, and creeks are spread throughout its campuses located in the cities of Sapporo and Hakodate, which experience distinct seasonal changes throughout the year.

Program Description:

The aim of this course is to develop students’ ability to understand the importance of tackling issues related to conservation of ecosystem by collaborating with stakeholders in various fields and promote the development of human resources who can contribute to “One Health”, which recognizes that “health” is not only the matter of humans but also of entire planet. 

Significant population growth, rapid global environmental changes in recent years have triggered variety of health problems, including health hazards caused by chemical substances and outbreak of emerging infectious disease. It is therefore essential to pursue “One Health” approach by collaborating various stakeholders. This multidisciplinary approach requires collaborations among various academic disciplines such as agriculture, engineering, sciences, economics, human sciences, education, information science and technology in addition to “medicine”. 

In this course, fundamental lectures on “One Health” and exercises including field activities and hands-on laboratory exercise with the focus on SDGs will be provided.

– Expand understanding of the importance of tackling issues related to conservation of ecosystem by collaborating with stakeholders in various fields.
– Develop willingness and attitude to engage in and contribute to “One Health”, which recognizes that “heath” is not only the matter of humans but also of entire planet.
– Communicate ideas with other students majoring in different disciplines/fields with diverse national and cultural backgrounds and discuss how to solve the issues related to “One Health”.

Course Outlines:

– Introduction of key terms – conservation of ecosystem, concept of “One Health”.
– Fundamental knowledge of veterinary medicine – bridge between humans and animals, ecosystems.
– Understanding chemical hazard control and chemical hazard countermeasures (epidemiology, risk management, food safety, basic toxicology, environmental toxicology, environmental remediation etc.).
– Hands-on experiences in laboratory exercises and field activities.
